III Bolt Action Rifle Pattern 1907 Sword Bayonet & Mangrovite Leather / Metal Scabbard Manufacturer: Sanderson Brothers & Newbould Ltd. Model: Pattern 1907 Blade Length: 17.00" Serial #: N/A TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE --> Offered here is a WWI British SMLE No. 1 Mk. III bolt action rifle Pattern 1907 bayonet and scabbard. It was made in 1917. This also comes with a metal and leather scabbard. These were modeled closely after the Japanese Type 30 bayonets. Originally they were made with quillons, but they were unpopular so the manufacturers stopped making them with quillons around 1913. These were made by British, Australian and Indian shops. The British government gave contracts to Chapman, Robert Mole & Sons, Sanderson and Wilkinson. This is a Sanderson bayonet. Enfield, Remington Arms (US) and Vickers also had contracts as well. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have light impact marks, scrapes and oxidation. They have turned to a darker patina color. The two screw escutcheons securely fasten the wood grips to the tang. They have light oxidation with light tool marks and strong slots. The wood panels have light compressions and draglines. The bottom of the grips have several notches next to the tang. The wood has darkened with age. The spine, fullers and sides have light scrapes and discoloration. There are no nicks or dings on the blade edge and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp point, however, it is slightly bent out of shape about 1/4". Some of the finish still remains, but most of the blade has turned to a darker patina color. The left ricasso is marked "1907 / 9 17 / Sanderson" plus some proof marks. The right ricasso is marked with the British broad arrow and several proof marks. The left guard is marked "D", broad arrow and "D". The left side pommel is marked with an arrow within a "D". The bayonet is from WWI and the scabbard is from WWII. The leather / metal scabbard is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The frog stud is securely attached. The locket and chape are both securely attached to the leather body. They have a very light wiggle, it is almost not worth mentioning. The metal has light oxidation on both pieces, plus some scrapes. The leather appears to not have shrunk much. The leather body has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. There are some light scrapes. Most of the finish still remains. The leather is marked "MANGROVITE 42". This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your British WWI SMLE rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
