Description: A lovely piece of wee Trench Art from the Great War's Trenches in the shape of a hand-made Button Sweetheart Brooch fashioned from a small combat-worn Other Rank's tunic button by a member of The Post Office Rifles c.1914 At the outbreak of WW-I, many tens of thousands of men came forward to volunteer for the Armed Forces, including 11,000 men who worked for the GPO. In fact every Post Office employee was sent a letter encouraging the male work-force to enlist.. and by December 1914 some 28,000 postal workers had answered the call… In fact by 1917 over 75,000 able-bodied men from the G.P.O. had enlisted with those remaining in service being used by the Government to send out Army recruiting forms & Ration books out across the country. As a result of the number of postal workers released for military service, the GPO was able to raise its own Regiment, The Post Office Rifles, composed of 12,000 men and, as trained infantrymen, they fought at Ypres and on the Somme losing some 1800 KIA and 4,500 wounded in action…with a Victoria Cross being awarded to the POR during the Great War… With mail to the Western Front’s trenches (and all other theatres) on the increase, the Army Postal Service sorting mail at the newly created he Home Depot in London’s Regents Park was increasingly manned by women, some 2.500 by war’s end and by 1918 had handled over 2 billion letters and 112 million parcels..! Produced from a smallFirmin & Sons, London-manufactured Post Office Rifle Other Rank’s combat-worn, tunic pocket button bearing the GPO cipher under a King’s Crown, this small sweetheart brooch is approx 1.75” wide and in lovely condition.. A lovely souvenir from The Trenches of The Great War. Thanks for looking..!
