Description: A cracking original example of a World War One Other Ranks Bi-Metal Cap Badge for a member of the Army Veterinary Corps Dating back to the British army of the 1800s (when only officer's were involved in animal welfare). in 1903 a more 'modern' Army Veterinary Corps was created and other ranks were recruited to assist the officer's work. Whilst the Corps Depot was created based at Woolwich in London, a second base was established at Aldershot in Hampshire with horse isolation wards and an operating theatre, however the WW1 Veterinary Corps personnel were still primarily drawn from the field of civilian veterinary surgeons. As such their military work was directed towards the animal welfare of army horses, dogs and & carrier pigeons at home and on the Western Front. However the AVC also served in the theatres of Gallipoli, Salonika, Mesopotamia & Palestine where expertise in camel welfare was very much in demand. Serving with distinction throughout the Great War, in 1918 the Corps was awarded a Royal prefix to recognise its impeccable service and was henceforth known as The Royal Army Veterinary Corps. A most attractive, bi-metal badge with slider with a lovely antique patina, which was bent to give the impression of being worn by a Great War 'old salt'.. A very good looking & iconic WW-I cap badge.. (B/W Image Courtesy The Tomahawk Films WW-II Archive) Thanks for looking..!
