Description: Winston Churchill's 14 October 1949 Speech to the 70th Annual Conservative Party Conference published in the Report of the Proceedings Winston S. Churchill London: National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1949 First edition Condition: Very Good plus Normal 0 false false false EN-CA JA X-NONE This booklet contains the first printed appearance of Churchill's speech of 14 October 1949 at the 70th Annual Conservative Party Conference. Four years earlier, Churchill's Conservatives had been soundly defeated in the General Election at the end of the war. Churchill would head opposition to the Labour Government until the General Election of 1951, which returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to the office of Prime Minister. At the 70th Annual Conservative Party Conference, Churchill delivered a 90-minute address to a crowd of about 10,000 in the Empress Hall, Earls Court, London. This address appears at pp.117-25 of this 128-page "Verbatim Report of the Proceedings together with the Text of Mr. Churchill's Speech". The booklet measures 9.75 inches x 6 inches and is bound in tan card wraps. Further Churchill words appear at p.126; a vote of thanks was moved afterward immediately after Churchill's speech and Churchill then made reply. Condition is very good+. The tan card binding is unfaded, square, and tight, showing light wear mostly at the spine extremities and corners and mild soiling. The contents are clean and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The speech herein was later printed in In the Balance at pp.105-18 and later still in Winston S. Churchill: His Complete Speeches, Vol. VII, pp.7860-71 under the title "Conservative Annual Conference". The booklet is protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve.
