William "Whilce" Portacio, a Filipino American comic book writer and artist was born July 8, 1963, in Sangley Point, Cavite City, Philippines. He moved from Cavite City to Midway Island to New Mexico and then his family settled in San Diego, California. Whilce discovered a love of comic books at the age of ten, when his neighbor's wife decided to get rid of her husband's collection. He discovered the work of creators such as Jack Kirby and Neal Adams. These two greats of the comic industry would have a tremendous and important influence on Portacio's art. Living in San Diego gave him the opportunity to attend his first comic book convention; whereby, he met and impressed Marvel Comics editor Carl Potts. Potts not only was impressed with Portacio's portfolio but he also offered him the job inking over Frank Cirocco and Chris Warner's pencils on "Alien Legion" (1984). This "shoe-in-the-door" lead to him inking over Art Adams' pencils the following year on the "Longshot" miniseries (1985). Later assignments were as as a penciller; working on such titles as The Punisher, Iron Man (Heroes Reborn), X-Factor, & The Uncanny X-Men (co-creating the character Bishop with John Byrne (Uncanny X-Men #282)). In 1992, Portacio left Marvel to co-found Image Comics with six other high-profile artists; however, he did not become a full-partner in the company and, therefore, is not a member of the IMAGE board of directors. This may have been in part due to his sister's illness, because he quickly withdrew from Image . He would eventually go on to publish his creator-owned title (Wetworks) through the Wildstorm imprint (Jim Lee) in 1994. It is at this time that his artwork becomes notable for his impressive, action-packed splash pages with one character dominating the page borders. He went on and started Avalon Studios with Brian Haberlin (1998). Worked progressed at a normal pace until August 2000, when Whilce went into a diabetic coma as a result of a failing pancreas. This very serious condition left him thirty pounds lighter & unable to walk, stand or even draw when he awoke a week after the incident. It took six months before he was able to pick up a pencil and draw. He described the feeling this way... "My mind could see what I wanted to draw but my hand couldn't accomplish it." Six years later, Whilce returned to his artistic duties at Wildstorm on Wetworks vol. 2, until issue #6; while also contributing art on Batman Confidential (DC Comics (2006)). Working with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane; Portacio would be the new artist on Spawn #185, McFarlane would be returning as co-writer along with Brian Holguin as the new creative team (October 2008 ).
