Description: "Face Profile" BY FOLK ARTIST WELMON SHARLHORNE FACE PROFILE11 X 17 Item Catalogue More information about the Artist:Welmon lives in New Orleans and often comes by my Gallery on Magazine Street.Born in 1952, Welmon grew up in Houma but spent years of his life behind bars in the famed Angola prison. The prison time made him the imaginative artist and survivor that he is. Welmon is often attired in his dapper shirts, caps and flamboyant jewelry, and artist glasses. “I’m serious about my glasses,” (He puts them on each time he looks at reading material, photos, and they have no lenses.) His art has a childlike imagination often with creatures , clocks and surreal houses. His work has attracted a lot of attention in this country as well as in Europe. Over half his adult life has been spent inside prisons, and it is from behind those walls that he made most of his drawings. "I’d tell ’em that I needed manila envelopes. They’d give me envelopes and Bic pens. Then I’d go to the nurse and get a thing for under tongues [tongue depressors] and make paintings with them." Sharlhorne glues manila envelopes together in order to get the rectangular shape he wants for some of the drawings. He cuts the envelopes with the edge of a ruler (scissors and knives were not allowed in prison) . One afternoon a number of years ago pre Katrina I was at my home in the Garden District, New Orleans, and Welmon Sharlhorne strolled up, as fashion conscious as ever wearing black silk shirt decorated in red flames,, lens-less wire-rimmed glasses and a shiny silver medallion, dangling from his neck. He sat down on my front porch with me and Roy Ferdinand, who used to work for me in the 1990's thru 2003, doing gardening.Welmon, and Roy , involved a friendly argument that day in the Garden District, as the aromatic smells of gumbo filtered from across the street from Commander’s Palace, I felt honored to be here in New Orleans, blessed to know these special folks and their art.
