Description: An original antique, copper-plate engraved strip road map incorporating significant detail of place names and topography. The map is an updated and reduced version of John Ogilby's strip-road maps, first published around a century earlier. These smaller versions proved extremely popular in the 18th century, not least due to their portability. Other noted cartographers such as Thomas Kitchen and John Senex produced similar versions, although Jefferys's maps are perhaps a little less common. The route passes through numerous places including Darlaston Bridge, Newcastle under Lyme, Warrington, Wigan, Preston, Garstang Cartographer / Engraver: Thomas Jefferys Provenance: 'Jefferys's Itinerary; or travellers Companion, through England, Wales, and Part of Scotland, containing All the Direct and Principal Cross Roads; with the Addition of every New Road, carefully collected from all the actual surveys hitherto published.
