Description: The English Interior 1500 to 1900 by Ralph Dutton published by B. T. Batsford Ltd, London, 1948. First Edition. Illustrated with drawings, diagrams, and reproductions from photographs. Hardcover with dust jacket. In this book, Ralph Dutton explores the various developments of styles, movements, and trends that contributed to the beauty of British interior architecture, decoration and ornament, starting when the first waves of the Renaissance were beginning to reach England from Italy, France and the Low Countries. He continues through the period of Inigo Jones and Wren to the great Palladian masters of the 18th Century, Vanbrugh, Hawksmoor, Gibb and the rest. The age of the Adam brothers follows, but with the erection of Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill decadence set in, and, on the 19th Century he traces the decline in taste to its nadir at the time of the Great Exhibition, and he follows its hesitant improvement through the influence of Morris, Webb, Norman Shaw, Voysey and others.
