Description: ~3~ LOVELY VINTAGE FRANCISCAN WARE (1949-58) Most are Half Moon Mark DESSERT / SALAD PLATES DESERT ROSE pattern BY FRANCISCAN, USA EARTHENWARE 8" Across I have 9 of these lovely and perfect vintage 8" Plates. Wonderful for Salads, Desserts, Sandwich I am offering 3 here. Certainly happy to sell you as many or a few as you need. Minimum of 2 please. Just let me know. Mint, Seemingly Never Used condition. No chips, cracks, wear or CRAZING No condition issues at all. They are smooth and really pretty. You will Love them. VINTAGE Pattern The Desert Rose Pattern was first introduced in 1941 and is still being made today by Wedgwood in the UK! These Dessert Plates have two different early marks. 6 Plates have the "Half Moon" Mark that was used from 1949-1953: "FRANCISCAN Made in California" 3 have the Black Ink Circle Mark used from 1953-1958. FYI History As you might already know, the Franciscan Ware series was first designed and made by GLADDING, McBEAN & Co. out of Glendale and Los Angeles, CA, USA. The company's factory was established in 1875 and closed in 1986. The Franciscan lines first appeared in 1934. However, in 1962, Gladding, McBean & Co. merged with Pipe & Ceramics Corp. to form INTERPACE Corp. A bit later, in 1979, JOSIAH WEDGWOOD & SONS out of the UK, purchased the Gladding, McBean & Co. factory from Interpace and continued many of its lines, including Franciscan Ware. Some of these lines were also transferred to their UK Factories, hence the ENGLAND notation on many Franciscan Ware marks, which would date them to after 1979. Eventually, the original Gladding , McBean & Co. plant in the US was closed in 1986.
