"A psychic thriller." - A married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter are in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond. John and Laura Baxter are in Venice when they meet a pair of elderly sisters, one of whom claims to be psychic. She insists that she sees the spirit of the Baxters' daughter, who recently drowned. Laura is intrigued, but John resists the idea. He, however, seems to have his own psychic flashes, seeing their daughter walk the streets in her red cloak, as well as Laura and the sisters on a funeral gondola. BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie met for the first time on the set of this film. The famous sex scene between them was a last minute on-set idea from director Nicolas Roeg who felt that otherwise the film would have too many scenes of the couple arguing. Most of the scenes around it are improvised. The first scene they had to shoot was the sex scene, as Nicolas Roeg wanted to "get it out of the way" and then move on to the "bone" of the matter. Christie was terrified. When he appeared on Inside the Actors Studio (1994), Donald Sutherland recounted the story of how the (In)famous sex scene was actually shot and that it was anything but a sexy or erotic experience for those involved. He and Julie Christie were on the set at 7 a.m. in dressing gowns, waiting downstairs while the room was prepared and both had a glass of champagne to calm their nerves. Inside the room was Nicolas Roeg and cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond, each operating their own Mitchell 35mm camera. Sutherland and Chiststie disrobed and got onto the bed and Roeg and Richmond began filming. The huge Mitchell cameras were unblimped (unsilenced) and as the room was oak panelled the noise from the two cameras was amplified hugely. At the same time, Roeg began shouting directions (over the noise of the cameras)to the actors such as "Lick her nipples" "Put your hand between her legs" "Get on top" etc.The shoot lasted until well into the afternoon before Roeg was satisfied and wrapped. The famous sex scene was completely removed by the Irish censor when 'Don't Look Now' was theatrically released in Ireland. In order to avoid an X-certificate rating for the film's American release, 9 frames (less than half a second) had to be cut from the intimate love sequence between Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. In her memoir, "Miss Aluminum," former actress and model Susanna Moore tells the story of throwing a dinner party attended by Warren Beatty and "Don't Look Now" director Nicolas Roeg. Beatty, fuming over the graphic sex scene filmed by Roeg between Donald Sutherland and Beatty's then-girlfriend Julie Christie, asked Roeg to step outside, which he did, unaware that Beatty was angry. Apparently, Beatty had heard unfounded (and later proven untrue) rumors that Roeg had cut together his own "porn reel" of outtakes from the scene and had been amusing his friends by screening it. The 6'2 Beatty then punched the much smaller Roeg in the face. Beatty then helped a shaken Roeg to his feet, examined his upper lip, and led him back into Moore's apartment.
