Congress had decided in 1890 the Chicago would be the ideal American city to host the celebration with a magnificent exposition. While the fair was dedicated in 1892, building delays postponed its official opening until May 1, 1893. Meanwhile the first Columbus half dollar were minted in November of 1892. ---------------------- 1917 Columbus $1 United States Note: The "Columbus Note" was the first to use the portrait of the Italian mariner on currency, coinage, or stamps. It was issued from 1869 to 1917 and portrays the head of our first president, George Washington. To the left of Washington, Christopher Columbus is pictured aboard his flagship as his crew first sights land. It is the same image that was later engraved on the one cent stamp issued in 1893. The reverse, because of it odd "X" shaped design, is known as the "Sawhorse". The United States Note (also called "Legal Tender Note") was first authorized in 1862 during the Civil War and is still current today, though none have been issued since 1969. -------------------------- First 3 Stamps of the 16 Stamp Series Commemorating Christopher Columbus 400th Anniversary of the Discovery of America: To honor the 400th Anniversary of the discovery of America by Italian adventurer Christopher Columbus, in 1893 the United States released its first official commemorative stamp issue. Timed for release at the 1893 great Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, the series of 16 stamps were not only the first to commemorate a specific person or event, but also the first large pictorial stamps and one of the longest sets ever issued by the United Stated Post Office. These first three stamps in the series will be coveted by many, but owned only by a few due to the limited availability. It is a set to be proud to own, and proud to pass on as a legacy for future generations. ---------------------------------- - Delivery Charges include insurance and tracking number. - Please note: Due to the value of this item, signature will be required. - Please see photos.
