Description: The Foolish Gentlewoman by Margery Sharp Hardcover Published 1948 by Little, Brown and Company in Boston.Printed in the United States of AmericaOriginal Price: $3.00A serial version of this novel appeared in Good Housekeeping. From the dust cover: The Foolish Gentlewoman is not a victorian novel. Chipping Lodge was the only house on Chipping Hill, and Chipping Hill was only eight miles from Charing Cross in London. There Isabel Brocken, a sentimental widow, uncritical, affectionate, "the foolish gentlewoman herself," was living when, on the last Saturday in June, 1946, her crotchety bachlor brother in law, Simon, came to stay at the Lodge while the bomb damage to his London house was being repaired. There he found also Mrs. Poole, the caretaker whom he had installed when Isabel evacuated herself to Bath during the blitz, and her young daughter Greta, but Mrs. Poole had become the housekeeper. There too he found a nephew, Humphrey Garrett, recently demobilizeed, who was carrying on a leisurely love affair with Isabel's companion, Jacqueline Brown, an attractive and efficient young woman. Everything seems serene until the arrival of the poor relation, Tilly Cuff, a meddlesome old maid, invited to visit by Isabel because she is suddenly obsessed with the idea of making amends to Tilly for a wrong deed committed when they were both young. Simon objects, but to no avail. What happens then is a constant delight. Plot, characters, dialogue and situations blend perfectly, and the result is a novel that is Margery Sharp at her best. The dust cover on this book is torn and frayed but the actual cover and binding on the book have minimal signs of wear. The majority of pages are undamaged and there are no missing pages; however, the inside of the cover is tinged brown and the edges of the inside pages have a brown tinge due to age. Considering its age, this 75-year-old book is in good condition. Examine photos closely.
