Description: THE ADVENTURER, a bi-weekly paper featuring some of Bluestockings member Hester Chapone's earliest writing. Although the authors of THE ADVENTURER wrote anonymously, later scholars have identified the essayists of all 140 pieces. Samuel Johnson, a co-founder of the paper, is unsurprisingly a large contributor; essays by John Hawkesworth, the editor, make up around half the total of the published material. The only woman contributor to this gentleman's paper was Hester Chapone, whose moralistic story "Fidelia" foreshadowed her later success with her LETTERS ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE MIND: ADDRESSED TO A YOUNG LADY. THE ADVENTURER was well-received on publication: in his introduction to a 19th-century edition, Alexander Chalmers notes "the sale in numbers was considerable, and four large editions in volumes were published in less than nine years" (xlii-xliii).
