An excellent book in the popular 'Anatomy' series from respected publishers Conway Maritime Press. Well worth the investment for model ship enthusiasts - contains hundreds of drawings and descriptions of every aspect of the vessel. This is the revised 2005 edition with fold out plan - rather confusingly the 1/150 fold out plan is on the reverse of the dust jacket - not the first place you'd think of to look! Here’s the official product info: The Constitution was one of the U.S. Navy's first six original frigates, ordered as a counter to the Barbary corsairs in the Mediterranean. Fast and heavily built, she was nominally rated as a 44 but mounted thirty 24-pdr and twenty-two 12-pdr cannon. Her most famous encounter, after which she became nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' due to British shot being seen bouncing off her hull, involved HMS Guerriere, which she smashed; the same treatment was meted out to HMS Java four months later. Now the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world, she is berthed in Boston Harbour. The 'Anatomy of the Ship' series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory views, with fully descriptive keys. These are supported by technical details and a record of the ship's service history. Here's an Amazon customer review (2008) which gives the book 5 out of 5 stars: the words are NOT my own and are used for descriptive purposes only The "Anatomy of the Ship" series are very much for the enthusiast. The non-enthusiast or merely interested with get more information from these books than they probably want. However they are, and this one is no exception, a fine study of particular vessels. K. H. Marquardt is an acknowledged expert on his subject and I imagine that the construction of the "USS Constitution" could not be better described although one of the the sail plans seems grievously mis-labelled and the conclusions about the ship's appearance at any given time is largely conjectural. Less than 10 percent of the hull timbers are original (fewer than our own dear "Victory" I believe)and even now in 2008 Constitution is again undergoing a refit to return her to her "original" appearance. The USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" is of course one of the frigates that gained notable victories over ships of the Royal Navy during the Naval War of 1812. The reason for these victories are endlessly discussed and they did not affect the outcome of the war only the protagonists later perceptions of it. But we British who are very proud of our sailing navy should bear in mind that the Americans, whether of British stock or not, were and are a fine sea-faring nation in their own right and their heavy frigates are a testament to their ship-building skills, Constitution still floats. If you are at all interested in the ships and boats of this era you need this book, it's all here from "keel to truck" from "clew to earring". The narrative is interesting and informative, the photographs being in black and white take away the "over polished" look the ship bears on its web-pages and the drawings alone are worth the price and more. If this is your first book in the series beware - you will begin to wonder about the details of the Victory, the Bounty, the Essex, the . . . 128 page hardcover published 2005 -------------------------------------------------- SHIPPING:UK Items usually sent by Royal Mail, with tracking SHIPPING: OVERSEAS ITEMS WORTH LESS THAN €150 / £135 From 1 July 2021, the Brexit transition period ends.
