The World's Columbian Exposition (the official shortened name for the World's Fair: Columbian Exposition, also known as The Chicago World's Fair and Chicago Columbian Exposition) was a worlds fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World in 1492. The centerpiece of the Fair, the large water pool, represented the long voyage Columbus took to the New World. Chicago bested New York City, Washington D. C. and St. Louis for the honor of hosting the fair. The Exposition was an influential social and cultural event and had a profound effect on architecture, sanitation, the arts, Chicago's self-image, and American industrial optimism. Each book weighs a little over 4 pounds is is approximately 14X20X1 inches in size. Pages are not numbered and some pages are torn, loose and/or stained. The spines are in good condition and the covers are somewhat scratched, torn and corners are bent. This is normal wear and tear for books this age. They are still in very collectable condition. The first book is entitled "History." It tells The story of the exposition and is illustrated in its history, architecture and art of the time. The remaining books are called "Sections." Section 1: This one introduces the reader to the next 5 books, and its title page says "The Art of the World, Illustrated in the paintings, statuary and architecture of the World's Columbian Exposition." It, as well as all the others, have page after page of beautiful pictures, some with a mat around them. Some are black and white, some are color. Section 2: This one contains a beautiful 8X11 picture of Romeo and Juliette, Presidents Roosevelt and McKinley plus many many more. Section 3: This book is beautifully illustrated in both black and white and color and the pictures depict ships anchored in Boston Harbor, people, animals and war time events. Section 4: Pictured are Spoils of war, Jesus being lowered from the Cross, children playing in the sea and fisherman, plus many many more. Lastly, Section 5: Depicting landscapes, people and events, some pictures are in color, some are black and white. As in all the other books, some pictures are matted with a white mat. This collection will be a great addition to your library or will be a wonderful gift for the art history lover.
