Description: Offered is the vintage book "Hammond's Self-Revising Superior Atlas of the World", published in 1942 by the Publisher's Guild in New York. The atlas contains dozens of color maps, of course, and since it was produced during the middle of World War II there are many maps showing the wartime situation of an expanded Germany, occupied countries of Europe, and the Japanese occupied areas of Asia and the Pacific, including the puppet state Manchukuo. Also present is Tannu Tuva, the one-time country depicted between Mongolia and the USSR. There are also several black and white "special war area maps", showing naval bases and flying distances between strategic points (see photos #11 & #12). Still attached to the binding is a coupon offering an updated atlas for 25c once peace treaties are signed and borders settled (see photo #3). In addition, there are maps of each US state, population figures for world and US cities, and more. This is a rare find; at the time of original listing I could find only one other copy of this year's atlas by this publisher for sale on eBay and none elsewhere. The book is approx. 13 1/2" x 10 1/4" and contains 159 pages. It is in fair to good condition. The red embossed hard cover has faded considerably and has some minor spine damage, where a small piece of the cloth surface is missing. There is also some soiling and moderate wear, mainly on the corners and at the top and bottom of the spine. There is some discoloration on portions of it and some small spots. Inside, things are better. There is no cracking inside either the front or back cover. The white endpapers have browned and are moderately soiled. I see no missing or torn pages and all of the pages are well-attached to the binding. They have browned slightly, mostly around the edges, and there is some light foxing. I see no writing in the book. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions.
