Description: Salem, OREGON - Sacred Heart Academy - ARCHITECTURE: Sacred Heart Academy was a religious and educational Salem landmark. Its brick building, with a 45-foot bell tower and a cross, graced the site for nearly a century. Three Sisters of the Holy Names came to Salem in 1863 at the request of Father Leopold Dieleman, who was assigned to Salem from the St. Louis Parish. On Aug. 22, 1863, the Sacred Heart Convent was dedicated on the northeast corner of Chemeketa and Cottage streets NE. The Sacred Heart Academy opened on Sept. 7, 1863, with 80 students, the Capital Journal reported Sept. 7, 1963. The building was demolished in 1971. Edward H. Mitchell. San Francisco.
