This nest was drilled into a Saguaro Cactus by a Gila Woodpecker or Gilded Flicker to provide safety from predators and a nesting place inside the Saguaro, where the resulting temperature is several degrees lower than the intense desert heat, When a bird compromises the outer skin of the Saguaro, it responds by depositing a hard substance, called callus tissue, that contains a woody substance, lignin, which surrounds the hole creating the nest/boot. Over the years, many of these nests have expanded and become quite large. Some get abandoned, and others get used by finches, sparrows, purple martins, and other birds. Even small owls like Elf and Screech also use the Boot. The average life span of a saguaro is approximately 150-175 years, and it can weigh 2 or more tons and be as tall as 50 feet. Even after the Saguaro dies and the external skin decays, you may see, internal to a Saguaro skeleton, a nest/boot that remains fairly intact. The large fully intact boots are more difficult to find.
