Description: This box set features two CDs with the complete recording of Rossini's Otello. The opera, recorded in 1978, features the voices of Carreras, Von Stade, and Samuel Ramey. The singing is extraordinary including the 'duel' of tenors tossing high Cs into the stratosphere. This is the young Carreras at his most exciting and stunning. The opera differs from Verdi's masterpiece in that Desdemona is a mezzo soprano rather than a soprano, and the men --- Otello, iago, Rodgrigo---are all high tenors. That makes for some pretty exciting 'challenge singing' for the men. Rossini's 'Willow Song' is exquisite. The Philips label has done an excellent job of capturing the beautiful melodies of this classical opera. The box set comes in a standard 'album' containing 2 cassettes and booklet with history of the opera, synopsis, and libretto. The two cassettes are in standard jewel cases. This is a must-have addition to any music collection. By the way.
