Description: 1834 William IV Antique A Lovely, Unusual, Rare and Uniquely Different Solid Silver Travelling Holy Communion Set in its Original Case. All pieces bearing English Sterling Silver Hallmarks for Charles Reily & George Storer, London, 1834. A lovely three piece unique set comprising chalice, decanter and Paten. All three fix neatly into each other and then fit neatly into their original leather case. Each piece plain and engraved with the ‘IHS’ Christogram within sunburst, comprising a communion-cup, with gilt interior; a paten on spreading foot and a bell-shaped wine bottle with bayonet-mount which acts as the stem of the cup, in fitted conical burgundy leather-cover case, tooled with an inscription: ‘Presented to The Rev Leigh Spencer M.A. by the Teachers and Friends of the Long Marston & Wilston Sunday Schools Sept’r 30 1850’. The Wine holder and Chalice fit together with a bayonet (plug and twist) action. When put away into the case the wine holder fits into the chalice very neatly. The base of the paten then fits into the top of the chalice, all fit very neatly. I have tried to photograph each of these unique items fitting together. All in very good order, no faults found. A beautiful rare, unusual and unique antique set. Presented in excellent pre-loved and used antique condition with minor signs of wear much less than would be considered commensurate. There are some scuffs and tape marks to the case. Measurements approximately: Wine holder height: 4.5cm (1.3/4”) Chalice height: 6.5cm (2.1/2”) The chalice when fixed to the wine holder measures height: 10cm (4”) Paten diameter: 5.75cm (2.1/4”) Weight: 97.45g The Christogram (IHS) refers to Jesus and is made up of the first three letters of the name of Jesus when written in the Greek alphabet. The three letters were incorrectly transcribed/written in the Latin/English alphabet as I H S. The Christogram became very popular in the Middle Ages and many explanations of IHS were offered, the most common being Iesus Hominum Salvator (latin for “Jesus, Saviour of Mankind”). Likewise, today IHS is sometimes understood to represent the phrase “In His Service”. The Christogram is frequently seen in liturgical art and architecture, especially vestments. This set is already in circulation meaning no new silver has been used. The ultimate in sustainable shopping. All of my items are carefully and lovingly selected by myself.
