Description: Punica granatum is a small tree/shrub in the Lythraceae family. It is native to northern India and Iran. One of the oldest fruits documented. The Greeks called it the "fruit of the dead." It was embroidered on the ancient clothing of Israel and Judaism. It is mentioned in several different bibles. In France, some specimens are over 200 years old. It can grow to 30 feet but is usually seen around 10 feet tall. They have glossy, narrow oblong leaves. The fragrant flowers are bright red around 1-2 inches in diameter. Resistant to deer but an attractant to bees, birds, and butterflies. It prefers regular water needs in full sun to part shade. Zones 7-11 Germination Soak seeds in warm water overnight. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
