Description: This oil on canvas painting depicts a true sun- drenched, Provencal view with a golden- hued wheat field, foothills in the distance and most importantly that special, silvery light that pervades this landscape and the South of France. The canvas measures 12 ½" by 18" to sight and 18 ½" by 25” in the gilt composition wood relief contemporary frame. There is some minor paint loss on the margins and surface grime along the left upper edge and top margin. The work is in original condition and there is no evidence of in painting or restoration. The work is signed lower left "Lucas de Montigny 1898." The artist was born in Ecques, Pas de Callas, France in 1844. He came from a family of artists. His grandfather, Nicholas Jean de Montigny was a noted 18c sculptor. Marriage brought him to Aix-en-Provence in 1872 where he was active in civil affairs and the arts. He was a member of The Society of Friends of the Arts, The Academy of Arts and Sciences and Arts and Letters Society of Aix.
