The process was discovered or invented by Alois Senfelder, a Bavarian, in 1785. An original hand-drawn print is fundamentally by it's nature a work of art. As it is conceived and executed by the artist as a singular expression, it is not in any degree considered a reproduction. An original lithograph is commonly printed in a limited edition on fine paper which has come into elemental association with the surface upon which the artist has worked. The processing and printing may be executed by the artist or, more frequently, controlled by him and carried to completion with an expert craftsman or printer. The essential points of lithography are not complex. However, the technical process involved in the printing of fine lithographs are surprisingly intricate. Due to this, artists generally work jointly with master printmakers. Peter Sculthorpe has been privileged to work with Master Printmaker Joseph Kleinman. Joseph developed his skills through many years of printmaking in France in the major Ateliers where the greatest artists of the century had made their mark. Joseph came to New York City in 1974, bringing with him a unique expertise and a passion for excellence. In 1975 he opened his own studio and earned a reputation for distinguished printmaking. He has produced limited editions for prominent artists such as Raphael Soyer, Chaim Gross, Alice Neel, Lester Johnson, Peter Max, Jacob Lawrence, Robin Morris, Romare Bearden, Pierre Alechinsky, Guillame Corneille, Walasse Ting, Karel Appel and Conrad Marca-Reli. In addition, he has produced work for such outstanding museums as The Brooklyn Museum and The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Peter Sculthorpe's original hand-drawn lithographs are printed in approximately 20 colors on Aches cover. Upon completion of the edition, all plates used are defaced under the artist's supervision. The quality of light in his compositions is pristine, yet the paintings suggest reality without being either sentimental or nostalgic. "My work is directly related to what I have observed in nature. The act of transcription is enhanced by what has been retained in my memory - the visual impact and the necessary elements. I feel the artist's true signature manifests itself when the combination of recollect and invention are tempered with reality."Qualities of ambiguity, complexity and tension that pervade his artwork give range and subtle inflection to his imagery. Using the demanding medium of watercolor, he manipulates light and form, giving his paintings a dramatic, romantic, yet natural tone. In addition, the artist is inspired by exploring a variety of other media including etching, monotype and stone lithography, each of which is related to his painting by virtue of his masterful drawing. Sculthorpe has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the American Artist Professional League Award in 1984, Philadelphia Sketch Club Silver Medal in 1985, election to the Watercolor U.S.A. Honor Society in 1992, and National Art League, New York, First Prize, Oil Painting in 1993.
