Description: Highly detailed copper alloy metal detector find. 4cm wide 3cm top to bottom. This originally had iron oxide which was magnetic - as shown adhering to a magnet - clogging up the ring appendage - as seen in the lower pictures. This was brittle, and I removed it, revealing the copper alloy ring as shown in the top pictures. I managed to drop it - which bent the open ring into a closed ring shape. I have polished off some of the oxide on the copper alloy using aluminium foil. Originally it was pretty much black in the as-found state. Any residue on the ring section is not magnetic, so its' tapered shape is not residue of iron containing material. Possibly attached at 3 or more points, 2 at the bottom corners and the ring on the side. With two attachment points broken off leaving a jagged sharp edge at the two bottom corners where the metal has snapped in a brittle fashion.. The right side of the lion looking from the front is straight and the assymetry of the design and of the attachment points suggest that it was on the right side of a Roman phalera. The cast in and tapering attachment ring demonstrating that it was not of itself designed to carry load and is purely decorative. I have shown it before being polished and the iron residue removed from the ring in th elower photos. Indeed it was originally black.
