HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), was a British statesman, diplomat, man of letters, and an acclaimed wit of his time. He was born in London. Educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. A supporter of the Whig party, Philip Stanhope entered government service as a courtier to King George I. Thomas Chambars (1724-1789), print maker.
