Description: Offered today is a beautiful mid-19th Century Victorian girandole, also referred to as Mantle Lustres or Lusters. I've seen it spelled both ways over the years. This girandole is in perfect condition with no damage, flaws, or repairs. It is 14 1/4" from base to cut glass top and the glass base measures 6 1/4" across. This lovely antique is quite beautiful with its white opaline glass and hand-painted, polychrome raised detailing at the top panels which resembles a crown, with the pointed, cutwork glass. Gilding features prominently along the top "crown" points, which slightly resemble a Gothic influence. The panels themselves are beautifully-painted and decorated with green, purple, gold, and blue. Looking inside the girandole, one can see where the wires in a circular pattern show where the original cut crystal spear-shaped prisms are anchored so they are secure and not in any danger of falling out. All mine prisms are there and intact. The cut crystal prisms are really luxurious and a lot of detail was put into them as they are there to reflect the lighting of the time period in which they were made. They reflected the soft glow from oil lamps and candles that provided light before the advent of electricity. This girandole is a beautiful survivor. One of those modern battery-operated faux candle pillars can be set inside this girandole and not only illuminate it from within, but wont have you scraping melted wax from the inside!
