Description: Original full-page engraved illustration of the 1871 Americus Club Ball at New York City's Academy of Music, printed more than 145 years ago. The image area measures 9¼" x 13¾", and the engraving was published in the January 21, 1871 edtion of Harper's Weekly. The illustration captures the vast sweep of the Academy's opulent interior, in a building located on the northeast corner of East 14th Street and Irving Place in Manhattan. Hundreds of guests in formal evening attire are shown gathered on the dance floor. In the background a large wall hanging depicts the headquarters of the Americus Club,in Greenwich, Connecticut, between Smith Cove and Indian Harbor. The club's president, and the organizer of this gala event, was William Magear Tweed, widely known as "Boss" Tweed, head of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in the politics of 19th century New York City and State. Condition: The engraving is in very good condition, bright and clean, with some faint toning on the outer edges and no marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique engraving, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It captures a moment in the political history of the city, shortly before Tweed's downfall. (Tweed was later convicted for stealing millions of dollars from New York City taxpayers through political corruption. He died in the Ludlow Street Jail in 1878.) Buy with confidence!
