One of our favorite trips on our travels in Oaxaca is to the village of San Pedro Cajonos! Situated high in the mountain Sierra Zapoteca three hours from Oaxaca City, this is one of the most idyllic settings that one may ever find! Perched at the top of the mountains, with sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and distant pueblos, San Pedro Cajonos kisses the clouds and shines in its art forms. Most famous of San Pedro Cajonos artists, is the Blas Family of wood carvers. Their style is so unique and can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors, and fine painting are their hallmarks. You just have to love the whimsy and creativity in these bird wood carvings. This gorgeous quetzal bird was crafted out of a single piece of wood and is filled with a sense of motion. And it is simply beautiful as well! So cool and so unusual! This figure is hand carved and painted by Javier Blas, the son of Medardo Blas, who passed away a few years back from a brain tumor. Javier commented to us while his father was towards the end of his struggle about the beauty of being able to carry on his father's art form. Medardo was well known for his gorgeous bird carvings. An excellent example of the beauty of folk-art traditions and their craftsmanship within family workshops! Nicely painted and a great size, this bird will make an affordable addition to your collection. A standout piece at this price! There are no removable parts, and it is signed by the artist. *The turquoise is more on the metallic teal blue side than what was captured in the photos.
