Description: Three New York Militia buttons excavated on the 1862 – 1864 battlefields near Fredericksburg, Virginia. They are called “Excelsior” buttons with the New York State Seal on the face. New York was the only state to furnish uniforms to their regiments throughout the Civil War. The buttons were made in three sections, a front, a back with the shank and a thin rim to hold them together. Most of them had a gold wash originally. These are in battlefield condition. The smaller buttons could have been worn on the cuffs of infantry coats or on the smaller shell jackets worn by the New York Cavalry and Artillery units. Fredericksburg, located on the Rappahannock River, was part of the 1862 – 1863 Confederate defense line protecting the Capital at Richmond. Starting with the Battle of Fredericksburg in December of 1862, the Battles of Chancellorsville (1863), Spotsylvania and “The Wilderness” (1864) were fought nearby. NOTE; the image of the New York Infantrymen is a contemporary reprint of the original; courtesy of the Library of Congress. The artifacts come in a 5” x 6” riker mount box as shown. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid to open. Copies of the paperwork shown will come with the certificate. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
