The port, although narrow, offers room for the horses tongue to pass under the bit. When the reins are engaged and the mouthpiece rotates on to the tongue, it applies two concentrated points of pressure on the tongue for quick control. Because this port is 2" high, it can apply some palate pressure, but allows for extra tongue relief. The black steel will discolor over time to an antique brown.The MBB flat shank is an indirect (curb) rein action designed to be used with a curb strap which attaches to the purchase.
