Description: During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), there was a cultural fascination with archaic bronzes and brass, leading to the production of new censers or incense burners emulating bronze or brass age forms. For instance, the tripod incense burner became one of the most revered forms alongside other vessels like bowls and pots. This antique Chinese bronze incense burner is also a Ding Censer. It was recently acquired from a prominent Bostonian estate of Asian antiques. Chinese Ding Statues are three - or four-legged bronze cauldrons, which are of important religious and cultural significance. The exact age of the incense burner is unknown; however, the characteristics and markings of this incense burner indicate that it is an antique piece of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The bottom of the incense burner appears to have an Emperor's reign mark of the Xuande era. There are two bronze handles in the form of loops with a repeating cloud pattern. The upper lip and lower portion on the outside of the incense burner has a repeating cloud pattern. The outside of the incense burner is comprised of several large chop marks that probably indicate the emperor's name, rein dates, and other symbolic information of the incense burner's purpose. This incense burner has tripod legs with a Chinese Lion or Foo Dog face, body, and feet. The underside of the incense burner has three Chinese "long life" symbols within mystical animals amongst repeating circular patterns. A large double circle encompasses the space between the three tripod Lion or Foo Dogs. Within the outer circle is a repeating pattern of spirals. Within the inner circle is the signed rein mark or artist mark. The inside of the incense burner is completely covered in Patina and Oxidation. The upper lip and outside of the incense burner also have patina and oxidation throughout. This incense burner main purpose would have been for worship or to create a pleasant smell for rituals, ceremonies, and daily life.
