Meteorite**NWA 17027, LL7**14.981 gram, Part-Slice, W/poikiloblastic texture!!

Description: NWA 17027 Meteorite Write-Up **Classification**: Ordinary Chondrite (LL7) **Weight**: 14.981 grams **Description**: NWA 17027 is a remarkable part-slice meteorite distinguished by its impressive weight and an immaculate polish on one side. This specimen is classified as an LL7 chondrite, noted for its unique textural characteristics that provide insights into its formation and history. --- Petrography The detailed petrographic analysis performed by A. Irving from the University of Washington and J. Boesenberg from Brown University indicates that NWA 17027 is a relatively fine-grained specimen, with an average grain size of approximately 200 m. The predominant poikiloblastic texture is a striking feature, characterized by olivine chadacrysts enclosed in low-Ca pyroxene oikocrysts. This texture reflects complex growth patterns and metamorphic processes. In addition to the predominant minerals, the specimen contains very rare remnant chondrule structures that are glass-free, suggesting limited preservation of original chondritic material. The accessory mineral phases include kamacite, which has been altered to iron oxides, along with taenite, chromite, troilite, and chlorapatite. Notably, some secondary calcite veins are present, indicating later mineralogical processes affecting the meteorite post-formation. The classification as petrologic type 7 is based on the average wollastonite (Wo) content in the low-Ca pyroxene, which exceeds 2.0 mole%, with some measurements reaching as high as 2.6 mole%. This classification reflects the degree of thermal metamorphism the meteorite has undergone, distinguishing it from lower petrologic types. --- History NWA 17027 was discovered in the Adrar region of Algeria in February 2023. Following its recovery, the meteorite was acquired by collector Matthew Stream in February 2024 from a local Algerian dealer. The Adrar region is known for its arid landscape and rich geological history, contributing to the unique characteristics of meteorites found in the area. --- Significance of LL Chondrites LL chondrites represent a subgroup of ordinary chondrites, characterized by relatively low metallic iron content and a distinct mineralogical composition. The designation 'LL' refers to the low iron and high total metallic abundance, contrasting with other groups, such as L and H chondrites. The LL7 classification indicates significant thermal metamorphism, which has altered the texture and mineral contents of the meteorite. The poikiloblastic texture observed in NWA 17027 sheds light on the processes that have occurred during the formation of chondritic materials in the early solar system. Such textures are indicative of high-temperature metamorphic conditions, providing an excellent opportunity for researchers to study the thermal history and genetic relationships of chondrites. --- In summary, NWA 17027 is a fascinating specimen that not only captivates collectors with its beauty and polishing but also serves as a valuable resource for scientific inquiry into the evolution of chondritic meteorites and the conditions prevalent in the early solar system. Its unique features, combined with its provenance from Algeria, enhance its significance in the field of meteoritics.
