New Campo del Cielo is a great meteorite to have in any collection. This was a huge fall/find making it a more affordable meteorite to own. Pieces of Campo that look like this were put in liquid nitrogen and exploded, then tumbled, giving each piece a unique shape. About 5,600 years ago in what is now called the Argentinian provinces of Chaco and Formosa, there was a huge meteorite impact. Massive pieces of cosmic iron debris rained down over the area. Today, there are about 26 known craters from this one meteorite. The first record of the Campo meteorite was in 1576. A Spanish governor learned of the iron from the Indians who reportedly believed that it had fallen from heaven. It is very possible that the native people did see it fall, but no solid record of an exact date is known at this time. They harvested the meteorite and used pieces of it for tools and weapons. The governor sent an expedition under the command of one Captain de Miraval who brought back a few pieces of a huge iron mass he called Meson de Fierro (large table of iron). The location of the find was the Campo del Cielo (field of the sky or heaven), a fitting name for the location of the meteorite.
