Description: I can't tell a lie, Pa; you know I can't tell a lie. I did cut it with my hatchet. Here we offer Mason Locke Weems's complete and delightful Life of George Washington; with Curious Anecdotes, Equally Honorable to Himself, and Exemplary to his Young Countrymen, published by Joseph Allen, Philadelphia, in 1834. This book is notable as it is the original source of the iconic American "Chopping down the cherry tree" story. The book was first published in 1800, but the cherry tree story was added in an 1806 edition. This edition features six engravings, including a frontispiece of Washington. It is bound in leather with a red spine label. Well worn boards with secure hinges (please see pics). Chipped spine pastedowns. Intact endpapers bear light, penciled period inscriptions. Light foxing throughout. Binding is very tight and square; text pages and engravings are very clean, bright and crisp. 228 pages, measures approximately 4.5 x 7-inches.
