WILLIAM BLACKWOOD AND SONS, LONDON M D C C C X C. DESCRIPTION (ii) + xxxviii + 428pp + (ii) (ii) + xxiv + 417pp + (ii) (ii) + xxi + 437pp + (ii) (ii) + xxv + 492pp + (ii) (ii) + xvii + 437pp + (ii) (ii) + xl + 528pp + (ii) (ii) + xxxix + 488pp + (ii) (ii) + xxvii + 378pp + (ii) (ii) + xxvi + 380pp + (ii) Books measure 180mm x 130mm approximately. Nine volumes, exquisitely bound by in full crimson lightly grained calf. No binders name present, but they are of the quality of Zaehnsdorf, Riviere, or Root & Son etc. This set is the Cabinet Edition and often these special editions were superbly bound. Spines with five gilt-ruled raised bands with gilt decoration and gilt motifs to compartments with title, author and volume. Boards with dentelles and double gilt-ruled fillet borders, and superb gilt inner dentelle work. Marbled end-papers and paste-downs. Many of the volumes contain engraved schematics, maps, and battle plans (some in colour), also some fold-outs. All volumes have blue silk ribbon page markers. All page edges in gilt. CONDITION All volumes are in very good condition indeed with bindings holding very strong and firm. There is the odd small surface mark (front board of vol VI) or very slight wear to a raised band, but seriously nothing more than that. Judging from the lustre and condition of the gilt page edges, it seems as though these volumes have hardly been opened. Internally the pages are very clean throughout with just an occasional spot and a little very mild age-toning towards end-papers, otherwise fine. The fold-out map at the front end-paper of vol VII has a small closed tear and some edge staining, with the following few pages having a few foxed edges, and a few other fold-outs have very small close tears, otherwise fine. These volumes are probably the best set I have seen for many years in terms of quality of workmanship and condition. A beautifully presented library set of very nice volumes indeed in quite superb bindings and great condition. Please always refer to photo images for a clearer indication of condition. We are always happy to provide further photo images if required. INTERESTING Alexander William Kinglake (1809 to 1891) was an English travel writer and historian. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the Bar in 1837, and built up a thriving legal practice, which, in 1856, he abandoned to devote himself to literature and public life. Kinglake was elected at the 1857 general election as one of the two Members of Parliament for Bridgwater, and was returned at next two general elections. His magnum opus was The Invasion of Crimea originally in 8 volumes, published from 1863 to 1887, one of the most effective works of its class.
