They are the palace guard responsible for looking after any prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British Crown Jewels. The quote "Quoth the raven nevermore" is taken from Edgar Allen Poe's 18 stanza poem "The Raven" and is a nod to the famous ravens at the Tower of London, known as the guardians of the Tower. It is said that the Kingdom and the Tower of London will fall if the ravens ever leave the fortress. Face Pot is from a large Kevin Francis collection. Hand written notation on front of box reading "Alfred the Beefeater Proto". Face Pot presents in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing observed. Displays very well, as depicted. Box is not in perfect condition. Fitting snugly into the palm of your hand, Face Pots were introduced in 2000 by Kevin Pearson and the art pottery team of Kevin Francis. Drawing on 18th Century Netsuke design combined with the best of art pottery and the English toby jug tradition, they became an immediate success and introduced a whole new genre of pottery commemoratives. Designed by top ceramic sculptors, each Face Pot is handmade and hand-painted in Stoke-on-Trent, England and made to the same high standard as traditional Kevin Francis releases. Each Pot contains a quote from (or associated with) the character portrayed. A studio pottery approach resulted in limited production numbers of each Pot.
