MENNINGER - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - HFSID 2882 KARL MENNINGER Karl Menninger sends an autograph letter saying that he is passing on a poem. Autograph Letter Signed: "Karl," 2p, 4¼x5½. Winter Veterans Administration Hospital, Topeka, Kansas, no date. The noted psychiatrist writes to Norm on both sides of his personal memo paper. In full: "You recall how you saved my life one evening by digging up this poem for me. I decided it ought not to be so scarce and our patients printed me up some to distribute to the younger generation. They all ought to know the it I think." Karl Augustus Menninger (1893-1990), the son of psychiatrist Charles Frederick Menninger and brother of psychiatrist William Menninger (the first psychiatrist to be featured on the cover of "Time" magazine), co-founded the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas with his father in 1919. They were joined by William in 1925, the year that the Menninger's had raised enough support to build the Menninger Sanatorium. The Menninger Foundation was founded in 1941 and quickly became a major U.S. psychiatric and psychoanalytic enter. Menninger, who is credited with crusading against the stigma of mental illness and bringing an understanding of psychiatry to the public, largely through his writings, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981.
