Description: Mixed lot of John George Graves Sheffield EPNS: Three forks (a pickle fork + 2 others) and two spoons (sugar) of mixed quality and condition. All are stamped J,G.G.& S. along with a lozenge containing C.S – there is some dispute over the meaning of this, it could be Coin Silver or Copper Silver. Graves (1866-1945) was apprenticed to W. Wichman of Gibraltar Street as a watchmaker. He then set up one of Britain's first mail order businesses, selling first watches and then a wide range of goods. The company employed, at its peak, 3,000 people in Sheffield and had an annual turnover of £1 million. The company was absorbed by Great Universal Stores after Graves' death.
