Iron stirrup – Haymarket, Virginia – Artillery Issue – Civil War Relic – 2028

Description: This heavier style stirrup were generally used by artillery branch of service. It was excavated from the Haymarket, Virginia area. The stirrup is part of a collection of artifacts recovered over the years by Terry Heilman and David Goodman. It has Terry’s original tag. On June 25, 1863, Confederate Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and about 5,000 of his cavalrymen approached Haymarket. They acted on orders from commanding Gen. Robert E. Lee, who was on the western side of the Bull Run Mountains marching north to invade Maryland and Pennsylvania. He directed Stuart to "pass around their [U.S.] army without hindrance" to screen the Army of Northern Virginia from observation as it crossed the Potomac River. Stuart took the intended route north through Haymarket on the advice of the noted partisan ranger Maj. John S. Mosby. Here, Stuart and Federal Gen. Winfield S. Hancock's II Corps converged on the Old Carolina Road simultaneously. Hancock, too, was marching north toward Leesburg. Stuart attacked the Federal wagon train and infantry, shelling them with six cannons. This bombardment "scattered men, wagons, and horses in wild confusion," causing several Union casualties. The Federals regrouped, formed a battle line, and marched toward Stuart, forcing him to make a decision either to fight the larger force or to retreat. Stuart decided to withdraw southwest toward Buckland Mills and sent a courier to Lee detailing his change of plans. Terry Heilman was a long time relic hunter here in Stafford County, Virginia. Terry hunted many of the sites here in Stafford County, 1862 Occoquan Defense Line and other Virginia/Maryland sites. Like my father and I he cataloged all of his finds in groups or a lot of them with individual tags as to where it was recovered. The artifact comes as shown with original tag. It measures 3 ¾” x 3 5/8”. Cleaned and treated. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
