Narrative: King Cormac's Chapel at Cashel :The Rock of Cashel is an outcrop of limestone (200ft) rising from the Tipperary plain, and is the focal point of the town and the surrounding district. Topped by one of the most striking ecclesiastical ruins in Ireland. St Patrick's Rock has outstanding architectural remnants of the early Christian era. Royal Seat - From about 370 until 1101 the rock was the seat of the kings of Munster, and therefore the provincial capital, and comparable in regal stature to Tara, home of the High Kings of Ireland. St Patrick visited Cashel in 450 when he baptised King Aengus; there is a legend that during the ceremony, St Patrick accidentally pierced the king's foot with the point of his staff but the king, believing it to be part of the ritual, remained composed. Cashel was a place of much importance during the 1OC when the holy Cormac MacCullinan was king of Munster; he was also a bishop but not of Cashel. In 1874 the Rock became a National Monument and was subsequently restored. NOTE: Some historian claim, that this is the first stone building in Ireland. The chapel is 50 x 18 feet in the choir. The ceilings are vaulted, the outside roof is corbelled, so as to forma pediment pitch. It is very probable it was built by Cormac on the very foundation of the church originally erected here by St. Patrick. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
