Description: Nice and original US M1874 Cavalry Shoemaker Horse Bit. This example is a size No. 1, as indicated by the 1/2" high arch in the mouthpiece. Both of the original US bosses are present and intact. All of the components of this bit are present and original, to include the lower lip bar and both rein rings. As you can see, the bit suffered a break long ago where the shank meets the lower lip bar, which was crudely repaired so as to continue using. Unmarked example. The Shoemaker bit is a classic cavalry piece that saw long, hard service on the western frontier by both soldier and civilian alike. Scarce. The bit remains in fair-good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. Surface shows oxidation and corrosion. A break that was crudely repaired is evident at the junction where the shank and lower lip bar meet. Please see the pictures for more detail. Guaranteed 100% authentic in every respect for life.
