Description: For your consideration is a rare Gorham Coin silver Communion Set, made circa early 1860’s. Consists of a Tray, Chalice, and a Pitcher, all in a miniature form. Rare, hard to find mid 19th century American Coin silver Communion Set, most early Sets were made in England for the American Market. Neat Brite cut accent decorations to this nicely proportioned Set. Set was Presented to the Reverend E. N. Potter by his constituents in the Grace Episcopal Church, Allentown, circa early 1860’s. Set was probably Given to E.N. Potter for his use during the Civil War, the small travel size and the time period the Set was made suggests this was the case. The Reverend Eliphalet Nott Potter (1836-1901) was ordained as a Deacon in 1861, and assigned to the Lehigh Valley circa 1862. The Dynamic Reverend Potter was also a College Professor, a Chaplain during the Civil War, and the President of three Colleges during his lifetime - Hobart, Union, and the Cosmopolitan university. Rev. Potter was also given honorary degrees from Seven different colleges and universities; was a published Author; and apparently a tremendous fund raiser who was very instrumental in the success of Union College. This Set is in very good age appropriate condition, just a few small dings to the Pitcher (see photo’s #14,15). Engraved on Pitcher: “TO THE REV. E. N. Potter From the Members of Grace Church Allentown”. All Pieces Engraved with what appears to be a “S” superimposed on a “M” and a Cross. Chalice also Engraved “Rev d E.N. Potter”. Marked: Gorham’s early Hallmark of a Lion, Anchor, and a “G”; and “60”. Total Weight: 132.3 Grams. Pitcher Height: 3 3/4 Inches. Chalice Height: 3 1/4 Inches. Tray Diameter 3 5/16 Inches. Thank you for looking and good luck!
