The plot follows a disfigured sculptor named Henry Jarrod who turns to murder in order to obtain the wax-coated corpses for his exhibits in a wax museum. Jarrod is a master sculptor who runs a wax museum in New York City, where he creates incredibly realistic wax figures of historical figures and famous people. However, a fire breaks out in the museum, destroying all of Jarrod's figures and leaving him with severe burns on the left side of his face. After the fire, Jarrod takes in a new partner, Matthew Burke, who helps him rebuild the museum. But Jarrod's obsession to make his new wax figures even more realistic leads him to commit murder to obtain the corpses. He starts killing people and using their corpses to create wax figures for his museum. The murders, however, become the talk of the town and the police begin to suspect Jarrod. The film is notable for being the first 3-D feature with sound to be released by a major American studio and it was a commercial success and helped establish Vincent Price as a horror icon. The film's use of 3-D technology is particularly effective in creating a sense of depth and realism in the wax figures. The film also features a strong performance by Price as the disfigured and vengeful Jarrod.
