Description: Here is an excellent example of an early Holmes, Booth & Haydens brass petzval portrait lens. The serial number dates the lens to approx 1859. The lens is in excellent shape and has been well cared for. It has a radial drive which works smoothly. The lens also takes waterhouse stops and comes with one stop. The glass is clean and clear in excellent shape for a lens so old. It has its mounting flange and front lens hood attachment. The focal length is approx 7" and it looks like it will cover around 4x5. The lens is approx 5 3/8" tall including the hood. The lens throws an excellent image on the ground glass and has the bokeh effect that these early petzvals are prized for. The lens is all ready for mounting and use. I tested the lens out on my 8x10 camera and have included one of the 8x10 shots I took with the camera. I'm not a professional and just shot it on photographic paper with a Packard shutter opening it for 2 seconds. Even with the simple test I thought it made an excellent picture and shows what its coverage is as that area is an 8x10 sheet. A great vintage lens.
