Description: Mount Clemens is city in the state of Michigan and the county seat of Macomb County. It was first surveyed in 1795. The settlement was incorporated as a village in 1851 and incorporated as a city in 1879. Historically, Mount Clemens’s largest industry for more than 100 years, from 1873 to 1974, was tourism related to the mineral baths, drawn from springs that were scattered throughout the city. One of the 11 bathhouses in the city was the Colonial, opened in 1896 as the Mt Clemens. It was located on Gratiot Avenue about a half of a mile south of the center of the city. The building, built entirely of brick and stone, was in the center on a 3-acre area which was the highest elevation in Mount Clemens. The Colonial was a large structure with broad verandas encircling two sides that added charm and distinction. The style of architecture later gave it the name of the Colonial. The main building, five stories high, was a stately structure with wide porches and several beautiful white columns. In 1906, a large addition was constructed on the south end of the hotel which included another entrance and a ramp for the disabled. An attractive feature was the roof solarium where guests could bask in the sun. The bath house was connected to the sanitarium by closed corridors, well-warmed and lighted. Most rooms were arranged in suites with private toilets. Modern elevators made all the rooms readily accessible and floors were covered with rugs to absorb sound. The Colonial went through several different owners and over the years, there were various projects to try to renovate the majestic facility and bring it up to present-day codes but mostly unsuccessfully. In 1984 the building caught fire and firefighters from seven departments could not save the once elegant and historic Colonial from destruction. The site now is the location of a drug store. bathcityofamerica The card is not post marked and is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear and nicely colored image.
