Description: This pair of intricately carved Oak Panels probably comes from an ecclesiastical cabinet of European origin. Each side panel consists of several interconnected carved pieces with carvings of two central female allegorical figures representing a Christian Cardinal Virtue. The artistic style and dress of the four allegorical figures can be best described as “gothic” or “medieval.” The left panel has carvings – top and bottom – of “Justice” with sword and balance and scales, and of “Fortitude” carrying a broken column. The right panel has “Temperance” with cross and scroll at top and “Prudence” with mirror and serpent at bottom These panels have been used as architectural wall displays or art hangings. They are in very good condition for their age. There are a few cracks in the wood and some warping on the sides but the frontal views are not affected. The original latch is in place on left cabinet and both panels still have some original metal hinge hardware. Note: There is a chip missing in the middle of the right panel near the latch area. there is also a small rectangular piece missing in the middle of the right-hand panel. See photos for details. Please examine photos carefully as they are an integral part of the description. Each panel measures approximately 27 ½” x 19”; total width 37 ½”. Weight approximately 20 lb
