Description: This vintage real photo postcard features pretty American actress, Gloria Swanson (1899-1983). Her fame was originally derived from acting in many silent films in the 1920's. She had talent. She was nominated three times for the Best Actress Academy Reward. She was born into a military family that moved from base to base. As a child, she was infatuated with actor Francis X. Bushman and that led to her aunt taking her on a tour of Essanay Studios. At fifteen years of age, she was offered and accepted a walk-on film role. Shortly after, she was hired to work in California for Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios. At age seventeen, she married actor, Wallace Beery. The marriage was of short duration. It didn't take long for her to become repulsed by him. Next came a seven year contract with Famous Players-Lasky/Paramount Studios. She soon became an international superstar. She appeared in a series of Cecil B. Demille's films including "Male and Female" (1919). She also played in movies such as "The Affairs of Anatol" (1921) and "Zaza" (1923). In 1925, Swanson joined United Artists. She was hired as an actress as well as a producer. Her first sound film role earned her an Academy Award nomination. Her film success waned in the 1930's. She returned to the screen in "Sunset Boulevard" (1950) to rave reviews. She made three more films and than restricted her career to television and touring stage plays. Swanson was married six times. After the marriage to Beery, she married a film executive and after four years the pair were in divorce court with her husband accusing her of having affairs with thirteen men. Yes, thirteen men. As a result, a morals clause was added to her studio contract. Marriage number three ended after five years time. While married to husband number three, Swanson had a long affair with Joseph Kennedy, the father of President John Kennedy. Marriage number four lasted two years and she felt compelled to marry this "gentleman" because he threatened to reveal to the public that she was pregnant by him. Before divorcing husband number four, Swanson had a three year affair with married British actor, Herbert Marshall. In 1945 Swanson married an investment broker for marriage number five. The marriage ended due to the husband's alcoholism and erratic behavior. In 1976, Swanson married for the sixth time. Her new husband was a journalist and writer. He co-wrote Billie Holiday's biography, "Lady Sings The Blues". The sixth marriage was the charm. The pair remained married until Swanson's death in 1983.The postcard was postmarked in 1929. The card is in very good condition (see scans).
