The statuettes reproduced in this item are terracotta. A white engobe (1) completely covers the figure which has been painted after cooking using precious pigments, such as green and blue, drawn from copper pigments. The figurines were meant to accompany the deceased to the afterlife by evoking the society that surrounded him during his lifetime: guards, military, ladies of the court, pets...especially camels, as they were numerous around the markets of China’s major cities, with the Tang controlling the Silk Road. Items made during this period are recognizable by some characteristic themes and their often very realistic treatment.Realism, which can be seen many times in these statuettes, began under the Han (-206-220), culminated in the 8th century with the Tang. But the term realism must be understood in a very special sense, as it is always conditioned by this tendency towards schematization that characterizes Chinese art in all its phases.At the imperial court as at folk festivals, dancers, singers, and acrobats were highly regarded.
