Description: FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE (1844-1900)Ecce Homo (1908) A Yiddish translation of the German work by Nietzsche, the famed philosopher, published in pre-World War II Poland Extremely rare: Only 4 other known copies in the world The German philosopher Nietzsche was “one of the most original and influential figures in modern philosophy” (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). This work (Nietzsche’s last), which Walter Kaufmann called “an incomparably sarcastic review of his life and works”, was published posthumously in 1908. Kaufmann writes that the delay in publication had a fateful implication for Nietzsche’s reputation. In the late 1920s, the Warsaw publisher Turem specialized in translating German literature into Yiddish (Agnieszka Żółkiewska, “German Literature in Yiddish Translation, 1891–1939”, Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry, Volume 37). In the preface to this edition of Ecce Homo, the translator refers to “this autobiographical monument of the most glorious and creative spirit”. There are only 4 other known copies of this edition in the world. Three are in libraries (WorldCat); the fourth is currently in private hands. It is available for purchase on the Abebooks.com website for $8,800. Offered here: Nietzsche. Ecce Homo: How One Becomes What One Is. Warsaw: Turem, 1929.
