Description: Watercolor painting done by Frederick Carl Smith (signed and known frequently as F. Carl Smith) before he left the east coast for California. He’s best known as a California artist but worked in Washington, DC for 17 years after art school before moving west. This work was given as a wedding present in 1912 from the artist. Inscription on the back reads: “West Hickory,” a scene near Tidioute, Pa. and a wedding present to Ralph & Louise Siggins on June 6, 1912 at Corydon, PA. Hard to photograph but legible in person. Lovely soft colors. Period frame, wavy glass, likely original, but has been later covered in radiator paint. :( Am leaving it to the buyer’s choice whether to attempt a paint removal or get a new frame for it. Opening is pretty close to 18x24 so it wouldn’t be a hard match. Tough call so I’m kicking the can to you! Piece is 12.5”x18”; frame is 22”x27.5” overall. I did take it apart to check on its condition, since you never know what you’ll find with a later frame job. Paint looks stable with some typical flea bites at the edges, probably due to old frame glue or some other horror. Some typical age darkening. I’ve retained the original artist-inscribed cardboard backing but put a layer of new archival quality watercolor paper between the painting and the backing to protect it a bit more. New custom off-white mat as well; I sacrificed the 1980s/90s green one to go gingerly with the art in my inspection. Main photograph is outside of the frame to reduce glare and show condition. I’m an interior designer and frequently find myself with lovely things that aren’t suitable for a current project, and I can’t keep it all, so check out my other listings. As a watercolor artist myself, I buy a lot of original vintage and antique watercolors.
